Fake Progress

Weekly Leadership Insights with Jake Luehrs

ONE QUESTION

What are you silently putting up with that you know needs to change?

ONE THING TO PONDER

Your boundaries die the moment you care more about being like than following your truth.

ONE PERSPECTIVE

We forget that the struggle IS the curriculum, in life and in business.

I’m not so sure most will like the way this edition starts, but I want you to hear it from a place of a true friend with the goal of telling you a hard truth:

We're not stuck because of our circumstances.

We're stuck because we keep making escape decisions disguised as strategic moves.

I have an acute awareness of this because I’ve done it far too often to know it’s not the answer.

Pain is a great motivator, but a terrible barometer for good decision making.

Blaming circumstances for how we feel is simply a deflection of the work we need to do both internally and externally.

The Uncomfortable Truth About "Problems"

Our business isn't struggling because of the economy.

Our team isn't underperforming because "nobody wants to work anymore."

Our growth isn't stalled because we need more money.

We're exactly where we are because we've been running from the same challenge that’s attempting to teach us a lesson for years.

We're masters at this game. We call it "pivoting" or "iterating" or "strategic repositioning."

This may sound counter intuitive, yet can I suggest you stay in your challenge longer?

STOP, just sit in it with humility.

It’s in these moments that the nuggets of wisdom get exposed.

Pain makes us move. Unfortunately, movement isn't progress if you're running in circles, which many of us are.

I know this because I hear all the reasons we aren’t where we want to be and very few of them involve taking ownership.

The Only Next Move That Matters

We are both the problem and the solution. Once we accept that, everything changes.

Once we fully realize that the way to true freedom is through taking 100% responsibility.

Stop complaining and belly aching about how you wish things were different and get to work on owning your part.

The most successful entrepreneurs I know have one thing in common:

They stopped running from themselves and started running toward what is possible.

Our circumstances aren't our ceiling. I’m convinced that our willingness to face what we've been avoiding IS.

I’ll offer a simple challenge if you’re willing:

What's the one thing in your business or personal life you've been avoiding dealing with for the last 6 months?

That thing you just thought of? That knot in your stomach?

That's not your problem. That's your next level.

If you’ve made it this far, I’m grateful for you and your time. Share this if you feel someone could benefit!

Onward and upward

LEAD & LEARN : WEEKLY PICK

PODCAST

Happiness is a Direction

THE RICH ROLL PODCAST

This is a deep thought podcast, nothing about it is surface level. So if depth isn’t the place you’re in, it may not be the right time for this one. I’m a significant fan of Aurthur Brooks. He dives into everything from why addiction plagues high achievers to the tension that shows up between striving and surrendering. Highly recommend if you’re in the right headspace to be open to hearing some hard truths.

BOOK RECOMMENDATION

The Impossible First
by Collin O’Brady

This week’s book recommendation is a different one. It’s a story of a man that crossed Antarctica unaided. I enjoy books that spring our human possibilities, mindsets, and grit. The story is super well written, grabs your attention and creates lots of things to ponder with regards to what is possible. If you enjoy this type of read, I’d highly recommend!
